CHALLENGE
Even small changes that can save a little money or eliminate day-to-day hassles help sustain morale and encourage reenlistment—factors that contribute to operational effectiveness. That is why the Air Force Clothing Office continually seeks to upgrade the uniforms of Air Force personnel, integrating the most versatile and durable materials available to provide clothing that meet mission requirements while emphasizing the service's unique traditions.
SOLUTION
With a five-person team based at Wright Patterson Air Force Base who draw upon a broad array of expertise around the world, Battelle contributes to this ongoing effort. The Battelle team provides: program development, CAD/CAM pattern development, manufacture of sample garments and work with subcontractors; and production, distribution, fit and evaluation of test garments throughout the Continental United States, Alaska and Germany. In addition, Battelle experts gather and analyze data on the new uniforms through the development of Web-based surveys of Air Force personnel and focus group discussions. Recent test programs have included Physical Training Uniform, polyester Service Dress Uniform, and Pullover Sweater. Two versions of a Utility Uniform that incorporate the Air Force emblem and the distinctive blue color associated with the service are currently being tested.
BENEFITS
Uniforms are now more durable and easier and less costly to care for, and also are available in a much wider range of sizes and lengths to accommodate today's diverse Air Force population—all as a result of this continuous improvement program. Many of the new garments use wicking fabrics that draw moisture away from the body, increasing comfort. Various types of permanent press fabrics have been tested, which improve garment appearance and maintenance. Additionally, some uniforms incorporate woven materials that provide increased strength and stretch in the fabric. As a result, the Air Force is able to outfit its members with better-fitting uniforms, lower maintenance costs, and extend wear, all while contributing to better quality of life and morale for personnel.
